THE CHALLENGE – SIGNAL-ABSORBING METAL The increasing trend of automating operational processes in remote warehouses is becoming the new standard, and for good reason. It significantly reduces human error, processing time, and costs, since robots don't draw a monthly paycheck. Besides that, automation notably increases warehouse productivity and optimizes space utilization. Specifically, key to this transformation are autonomous pallet shuttles – a robotic system designed to move goods from one location to another. It uses sensors, cameras, and CPUs to navigate around facilities, optimizing productivity and space use. With such machinery at the scene, less indeed becomes more. However, this silver lining is not without its cloud. All the software and technologies within pallet shuttles need to be part of one cohesive system. This system needs a mechanism for wireless M2M communication and dependable management systems, enabling remote monitoring and control. Not only that, but the warehouses' metal shelves are also a significant hurdle, as they absorb electromagnetic radio waves – the essence of Internet signals. So is there a feasible way to overcome signal interference and ensure seamless performance for the pallet shuttle system? TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – THE Wi-Fi MESHING OF MACHINES To counteract signal interference, our partners from Anit Otomasyo deployed multiple RUTX10 industrial routers throughout the warehouse and within the pallet shuttles. Connected directly to Siemens CPUs via Ethernet, these routers enabled the pallet shuttles to function seamlessly and act in accordance with commands based on data received from sensors, cameras, and the CPUs. The scattering of RUTX10 devices throughout the warehouse wasn’t done without a reason. It was a strategic move for enabling the grand feature of the RUTX10 router: wireless (Wi-Fi) mesh functionality. This ensures the scalability of the solution and uninterrupted connectivity, even when one or two devices in the network’s architecture go down. This is because Wi-Fi mesh can automatically reroute the network, with functioning routers covering for those busy with rebooting. With this network architecture, the pallet shuttles can smoothly operate while distributing goods around the warehouse. Additionally, Wi-Fi mesh allows you to only need to configure a single router and then auto-apply its configuration to all other routers, making the network’s configuration process much more efficient. RUTX10 also has a fast-roaming feature, which allows pallet shuttles to “catch” and switch to the strongest Internet signal. This helps bypass interruptions from weak Wi-Fi transmissions. Now, what about the remote management of the solution? Just like any Teltonika Networks router or gateway, RUTX10 is compatible with our Remote Management System (RMS), and two of its great services. With RMS Management, Anit Otomasyon's team can monitor system performance and address issues remotely.   • Creating a Landmine-Free World with Ariadna

    Explore Teltonika Networks' IoT devices contribute to creating a landmine-free world with Ariadna technology. Discover the use case now! Creating a Landmine-Free World with Ariadna HIGHLIGHTS ✔ KoNaR is a student robotics interest group at the Department of Cybernetics and Robotics of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. It takes part in international projects covering robot construction and control, artificial intelligence, and embedded systems. ✔ In order to compete in the Minesweepers international robotic competition on humanitarian demining, KoNaR designed the Ariadna autonomous pyrotechnic robot. However, this robot needed a way to establish reliable communication with its command center. ✔ Coming to the rescue was a pair of our RUT241 industrial cellular routers, with their compact size and easy-to- install nature playing key roles in this solution. THE CHALLENGE – A REAL-LIFE VERSION OF MINESWEEPER There are an estimated 110 million land mines in the ground at this very moment, killing or maiming over 5000 people annually. Demining efforts are being made, of course, but each mine costs $3-30 to make and $300-1000 to remove, while more of them are being planted than removed each year. A solution to this problem must, by the nature of how dangerous demining can be, involve the use of robots. To that end, many robotics developers compete in the Minesweepers international robotic competition on humanitarian demining. KoNaR is one of those competitors, inspired by the concise mission statement of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers: “to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.” KoNaR’s creation was the Ariadna autonomous pyrotechnic robot, capable of detecting mines, avoiding collision with obstacles, carrying cargo, and returning to its base of operations. A suite of modern sensors, including LIDAR, GPS, IMU, and Depth Camera, allow Ariadna to take on demining missions. But as any autonomous robot developer can tell you, autonomy doesn’t mean much if communication between robot and operator, as well as optional remote control, aren’t also part of the package. Basically, KoNaR needed a way to establish reliable communication with Ariadna as it set out to the wilderness in search of life-threatening mines. TOPOLOGY THE SOLUTION – SWEET CHILD O’ MINE The students at KoNaR asked the group’s graduates for advice on connectivity devices with proven success in robotics use cases. The graduates, naturally, recommended Teltonika Networks. A pair of our RUT241 industrial cellular routers were chosen to be implemented – one in Ariadna’s PC, connected via an Ethernet cable, and another in the command center. This setup of two routers provides a superb, steady connection performance bolstered by a dedicated VPN service, and allows the command center to have full control over Ariadna using Wi-Fi. This is all in spite of the adverse environmental conditions and long distances covered by the robot in its routine demining missions. In addition, as Ariadna is already packed with devices – space is at a premium. Key features of the RUT241 in this solution are therefore its compact size and easy-to-install nature, which succeed in establishing stable network connectivity at no cost to setup complexity. This networking solution utilises covert surveillance cameras to monitor a popular habitat for migratory birds 24/7 and automatically alert personnel if trespassers or signs of forest fire are detected. ✔ Enabling this outdoor solution is our RUT951 cellular router, equipped with dual SIM WAN failover functionality, IPsec protocol support, SIM command for automatic reboots, and a host of features for easy remote management and control of the networking solution. The challenge – the ABCs of biodiversity Since 1970, the average size of wildlife animal populations worldwide has declined by 69% . Given these percentages, it’s no surprise that wildlife and biodiversity conservation efforts are doing everything they can to combat this trajectory. The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS) is a good example of this. Established in 1957, HKBWS raises awareness and promotes action by organising local birdwatching activities. To ensure these activities do not interfere with the birds, HKBWS teamed up with RoboticsCats to deploy the AI Biodiversity-Care system (ABC) at a fish pond managed by HKBWS, as it is a popular habitat for migratory birds during winter and spring . This system utilises covert surveillance cameras to monitor the birds 24/7 and automatically alert personnel if trespassers or signs of forest fire are detected. Of course, such a system requires robust and reliable connectivity for real-time detection and video streaming. Ensuring automated, high-availability operation and remote management of this outdoor solution is paramount for its success. In other words, an industrial-grade and feature-rich cellular router is needed. Topology The solution – wildlife protection cellular router RoboticsCats chose the Teltonika Networks RUT951 industrial cellular router for its ABC outdoor solution. Connected to the CCTV cameras via Ethernet, this 4G router provides reliable and seamless LTE Cat 4 connectivity for both video streaming and automatic alerts. This connectivity is further boosted using a rooftop SMA antenna for improved mobile signal reception. Integral for this networking solution is the RUT951 being no mere router with a SIM card: it has 2 SIM card slots, enabling WAN failover that automatically switches to an available backup carrier connection in case one of the cards fails. In addition, RoboticsCats relies on the RUT951’s robust VPN support, and the IPsec protocol in particular, for secure site-to-site remote control of the outdoor solution from its office, where the RUTX11 cellular router is used. It also uses the Auto Reboot feature of RutOS to automatically reboot the cellular router if either the connection or the IPsec VPN is unstable. Manual reboot via SIM command is also possible. After rebooting, the device automatically emails the RoboticsCats engineering team, helping them respond to unexpected incidents quickly. Overall, this automates network management and improves remote site operations. The RUT951 dual SIM card router is encased in aluminium housing with plastic panels and can comfortably operate in temperatures ranging from -40 °C to 75 °C. This makes it more than reliable for deployment in Hong Kong fish ponds as well as by RoboticsCats’ partners and customers overseas, using the solution’s blueprints. RoboticsCats standardizes its remote camera network design using Teltonika routers and shares the design blueprint and best practices with its overseas partners and customers. Just as in wildlife protection, networking solutions benefit from planning failsafe backup plans. A dual SIM card router offers a level of connection reliability without which an automated AI system cannot operate reliably. IoT Gateway for Utilities SCADA System in Sharjah, the UAE Highlights ✔ Avanceon is an automation and control engineering solution provider operating from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to service 16 industrial and manufacturing market segments, including energy and utilities, critical infrastructure, and transportation. ✔ Its client, the Sharjah Electricity, Water & Gas Authority, has a SCADA system that includes APN SIM cards. These bolster the system’s security but present some M2M communication challenges, necessitating an IoT gateway that supports the DNP3 protocol and is capable of port forwarding. ✔ The device chosen is our TRB246 IoT gateway, enabling this remote management solution by providing robust serial communication support and reliable LTE Cat 4 connectivity. The challenge – the complexities of SCADA communication Supervisory control and data acquisition ( SCADA ) systems are an integral part of the telemetry and utilities sector. SCADA systems enable both private companies and governmental authorities to remotely manage and control PLCs, collect usage data of utilities such as electricity, water, and gas, and perform tasks such as pump activation or valve closing. Our partner, Avanceon, was helping the Sharjah Electricity, Water & Gas Authority (SEWA) in the UAE to establish smooth connectivity and implement a SCADA system for the energy and utilities critical infrastructure in the city of Sharjah. When it came to choosing the networking device, however, this solution’s criteria presented a challenge. SEWA needed the chosen networking device to include private Access Point Name (APN) SIM cards. This inclusion would bypass the security risk of using a regular SIM card and have its data transmitted publicly over the cloud. However, private APN SIM cards make remote management and control of the PLCs difficult. They demand port forwarding to be used, directing M2M communication to a designated TCP port number supported by the SCADA system. In other words, an IoT gateway that could enable this redirection was needed. Topology The solution – port forwarding IoT gateway Avanceon chose the Teltonika Networks TRB246 industrial IoT gateway to facilitate redirected M2M communication in SEWA’s SCADA system. On one end of the system, the device is connected to the SCADA computer system in SEWA’s headquarters in Sharjah. On the other end, for every PLC distributed in Sharjah and connected to this SCADA system, a TRB246 IoT gateway is installed as well. The connection on both ends is done via the IoT gateway’s RJ45 port. The complexity of this solution is not in its physical setup – it’s in the architecture of its M2M communication. The PLC monitors the myriad of telemetry data, such as water pressure in pipes, gas flow, and electricity usage, and transmits it wirelessly to the remote SCADA system. This transmission is carried out via port forwarding : redirecting and forwarding the communication request from the PLC to a designated port number supported by the SCADA system: the TCP port 20000. This facilitates secure and effective communication via the DNP3 protocol. The SCADA system then analyses the telemetry data and can perform remote troubleshooting of any end equipment connected to the PLC. This minimises downtime and eliminates the need for engineers to travel for manual troubleshooting – resulting in an impeccably-automated remote system without sacrificing security. Port forwarding and support of the DNP3 protocol are the main features needed in this case, but the TRB246 has plenty more to offer. This industrial IoT gateway provides reliable LTE Cat 4 connectivity with dual SIM functionality, auto-failover, backup WAN, and more switching scenarios for maximum connection reliability. Apart from the DNP3 protocol, the TRB246 also supports Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, DLMS, and many other communication protocols. In terms of interfaces, it is equipped with the aforementioned RJ45 port, as well as I/Os and 16-pin terminal block RS232 port and RS485 port. Housed in durable aluminium housing with DIN rail mountain options and capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -40 °C to 75 °C, this IoT gateway can handle any industrial environment the PLCs are installed in. Topology The solution – compact cellular router to the rescue To complete this IoT solution, the RUT241 cellular router was a perfect choice! It enables Internet access through cellular 4G LTE connectivity without the need for any wired connection, allowing lower installation costs and greater flexibility in station placement. This 4G router also made possible to collect real-time data from its EV charging stations and manage it remotely via the Elios.cloud remote management system. With instant access to key metrics such as energy consumption, charging session status, and device health, our partner was able to proactively identify and resolve issues, minimising downtime and maintenance costs. It also allowed users to check real-time charging station availability and reserve a station in advance, improving user experience, convenience, and operational efficiency. The RUT241 cellular router features a built-in wireless access point, enabling NFC payments directly at the charging station. This allowed end-clients to pay effortlessly using smart wallets or credit cards for their EV charging services. With its compact size, standing at only 83 x 25 x 74 mm and plug-and-play functionality, the RUT241 cellular router fits seamlessly into EV chargers without requiring any additional modifications. This EOL stage begins with the end of production and distribution and ends with the end of product support.
