- OVERCOMING DESERT CONNECTIVITY CHALLENGES IN DAKAR 2022
Teltonika Networks puts great emphasis on creating products to connect IoT equipment into a reliable, secure, and easy-to-use ecosystem. Keeping in mind that the rally crew does not involve any IT professionals, the simple structure and usability were critical factors. Using two dual-modem RUTX12 cellular routers ensured network reliability and increased throughput by load-balancing across four different network providers. Since the late 70s, it has become a phenomenon known by people across all continents, ages, and occupations. Lithuanians also love to watch Dakar, especially lately, since more and more Lithuanian competitors started participating in different race categories. This year also marks a significant milestone for us at Teltonika, with Vaidotas Žala and Paulo Fiuzo entering Dakar, representing the Teltonika Racing team for the first time in history. IOT BENEFITS IN RACING Teltonika Networks industrial connectivity devices have been successfully implemented and tested in harsh conditions across various races worldwide, including hot and dusty Sub-Saharan desert or rainy European climate. Although we could not install any of our products in the MINI X-Raid race car driven by Vaidotas and Paulo in Dakar, we sure did upgrade their support truck by setting up a boundless, desert-proof connectivity solution. Taking place in Saudi Arabia, this year's rally began with callous conditions. The already unwelcoming sandy deserts have been flooded by heavy rain and turned into pools of dirt in some areas, adding yet another challenge for the race crews facing extreme conditions. Besides dust, rocks, erg, radical temperature changes, they also have to battle mud and humidity. Such unpredicted weather undoubtedly results in noticeably more accidents and failures for race cars. Besides, they are more exhausting for the racers too. Having a well-connected support truck can be game-changing in situations like these. Once the race car returns to bivouac, the team can proceed with check-ups and repair works, while the drivers can rest but remain in contact with the crew whenever needed. The cameras installed on the support truck allow them to keep an eye on what's happening on the ground and stay up to date with the progress entirely remotely. Another major benefit of using industrial networking products is their high-level security. The team members can connect their work and personal equipment to the network and use Wi-Fi worry-free because of multiple professional security features and easy-to-use Hotspot functionality. TELTONIKA NETWORKS CONNECTIVITY SOLUTION Teltonika Networks puts great emphasis on creating products to connect IoT equipment into a reliable, secure, and easy-to-use ecosystem. Keeping in mind that the rally crew does not involve any IT professionals, the simple structure and usability were critical factors. Using two dual-modem RUTX12 cellular routers ensured network reliability and increased throughput by load-balancing across four different network providers. On the other hand, implementing a PoE+ switch enabled a quick and straightforward setup of multiple devices in a plug-n-play manner. Upon arrival, the team put up the solution in no time and could enjoy stable internet connectivity straight after inserting four different SIM cards of local operators. We have prepared a detailed use case and a topology explaining the complete solution and its' benefits, accessible via the link below. Vaidotas was also kind enough to take his time and walk us over this connectivity set up in a short, easy-to-understand video that includes a speed test. We hope you'll enjoy it! FOLLOW THE TELTONIKA RACING TEAM PROGRESS! This year's Dakar rally is picking up pace and will continue until the 14th of January. If you are interested in meeting the crew, following how the Teltonika Racing team progresses, and accessing the latest footage, please check out the Teltonika Racing website, where we share all the latest news. - NIS2 Directive & Your Networking Solutions Cybersecurity
The NIS2 Directive requires EU companies to adopt numerous cybersecurity measures. Check if it applies to you and what actions are necessary. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices NIS2 Directive & Your Networking Solutions Cybersecurity 17 July 2024 The European Union has mandated compliance with the NIS2 Directive by October 2024 for numerous companies in both the private and public sectors. This new cybersecurity regulation encompasses many aspects focusing on a company’s security policies. Learn about the requirements and how Teltonika can help you meet the NIS2 Directive standards. We said it once and will say it again: cybersecurity is not to be taken for granted. Unfortunately, cyberattacks in both the private and public sectors continue to thrive and expand, as evidenced by the 57% increase in such attacks in Europe in 2023. This isn’t a good sign, but if there’s a silver lining, it’s that these incidents highlight the need for companies to reassess and improve their IoT security measures. Now, the growing concern about IoT security, and cybersecurity in all its forms, extends beyond the private and public sectors and includes governmental bodies as well. The European Union is just as invested in taking great cybersecurity measures to protect companies from any unwanted exposures, especially those working with critical infrastructure. With new EU cybersecurity regulations set to be implemented by October 2024, you should familiarise yourself with the NIS2 Directive, its purpose, regulations, and the potential consequences of non-compliance. WHAT MAKES NIS2 DIFFERENT FROM NIS? The NIS Directive was the first piece of EU-wide legislation ordering companies operating within the scope of the European Union to achieve certain cybersecurity standards. These standards included measures to control and prevent risks and the obligation to report incidents while cooperating with authorities. This directive was mostly relevant to companies working in critical infrastructure and key digital service providers in the transportation , energy, and financial sectors. The original NIS Directive was introduced nearly 7 years ago, in 2017 . Much has changed in the digital world since then. So, it was inevitable that the European Union would update the NIS Directive to ensure IoT security. And indeed, it did. This second iteration of the NIS introduced by the EU is bigger, stronger, and stricter, aiming to establish higher cybersecurity standards for enhanced network infrastructure protection that companies must comply with by October 2024. NIS2 DIRECTIVE REGULATIONS COMPANIES MUST COMPLY WITH There are four overarching types of requirements in the NIS2 Directive that are most crucial for a company to comply with: 1) Risk management – companies must mitigate risks by focusing on strengthening its network infrastructure protection, supply chain security, and networking solutions’ access control and data encryption methods. 2) Corporate accountability – corporate management must oversee and instruct its employees to implement security measures in their daily tasks and address any cybersecurity risks they identify. 3) Reporting obligations – essential and important entities must promptly report any security incidents they experience, complying with specific deadlines for incident reporting, like the 24-hour early warning . 4) Business continuity – companies must plan in advance their actions taken in the event of a major cyber incident, including conducting system recoveries, implementing emergency procedures, and assigning a dedicated team, responsible for crisis management. Teltonika’s Head of IT Infrastructure and Security, Artūras Golyšenko, advises: “It’s likely that companies will involve only their IT staff in the preparation for the NIS2 Directive, seeing it as just another technological conundrum. However, to enhance the resilience of the whole organisation against cyber threats, the team should include not only technical experts but also heads of multiple departments, lawyers, employees responsible for the company’s services, and even managers. “As the scope of cyber-attacks also includes human error, the IT department alone won’t be enough to help prepare. It’s important to foster a cyber security culture in companies by providing employees with basic and specialised knowledge on dealing with certain situations. “By doing so, all stakeholders in the company will have the information they need and be able to identify problem areas and address them. This guarantees continuity in the development of the cybersecurity process.” For more information, check out this comprehensive overview of the NIS2 Directive’s contents. This leads us to the next question… HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOU? Consider this question carefully, as the original NIS Directive had a narrower impact, affecting fewer critical infrastructure companies that specialise in sectors such as energy , health, transport, finance, water supply, and digital infrastructure. Now, the NIS2 Directive not only continues to focus on these six sectors but also expands to include nine additional sectors, such as waste management , manufacturing, research, digital providers, and more. So, the list is far larger than it previously was. It’s also crucial to consider your company’s size when determining compliance with the NIS2 Directive. Essential entities, defined as companies with around 250 employees and a €50 million annual turnover, must comply. Similarly, important entities with about 50 employees and a €10 million turnover are also required to adhere to the Directive. However, it’s important to note that companies that don’t fit these categories may still need to comply if they provide critical services vital to societal or economic activities in a member state. If companies subject to the NIS2 Directive won’t comply with the requirements, they will become prone to penalties . These penalties can manifest as non-monetary remedies, administrative fines, or even criminal sanctions. And despite all this, your company’s sector not being in the list doesn’t mean you’re off the hook, as there’s a high chance your services or products could be utilised in one of the affected sectors. In other words, your company must comply with the NIS2 Directive regulations, too. WHAT IF YOUR COMPANY FAILS TO COMPLY WITH NIS2? As mentioned before, companies subject to NIS2 will require their vendors and partners to comply with its regulations to ensure a secure supply chain and to avoid fines. Failure to comply could result in your potential or current clients not renewing contracts, adversely affecting your business. Another important concern lies within your company’s reputation. If your company doesn’t comply with the NIS2, it might be considered untrustworthy or incompetent in maintaining a high level of cybersecurity. So, ignoring the NIS2 Directive regulations will put your company at a disadvantage, surely affecting its relationship with clients and overall business. YOUR COMPANY WILL COMPLY WITH TELTONIKA Teltonika invests a significant amount of time and effort into not only enhancing the security of our networking devices and IoT security, but also our cybersecurity policies. As our headquarters are located in Lithuania, we must comply with all EU regulations, including the NIS2 Directive. The EU NIS2 Directive has yet to be transposed into Lithuanian law. The specific regulations from the Lithuanian National Cybersecurity Centre are expected to be announced in Q4 2024. In the interim, we adhere to the best cybersecurity practices, utilising state-of-the-art technologies and managing our systems in accordance with ISO27001 and ISO9001. Teltonika’s networking device unit has recently become an official member of the CVE programme community . This membership enables us to ensure quick incident reporting by allowing us to establish, register, and publish CVEs ourselves. It’s also important to highlight a huge benefit of our Remote Management System (RMS), as with it, our clients can attain secure remote management capabilities of their entire networking solution and oversee each component’s health and status. RMS can be used to monitor whether all involved IoT devices are continuously working as they should. If not, RMS can effectively alert the client about any incidents or potential risks based on pre-configured rules. TELTONIKA’S TAKE ON SSDL When developing software systems for our networking devices, our R&D and cybersecurity engineers follow a Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDL) process. This is to ensure our networking devices are secure from the start, even before any additional security measures are added to them. We approach our SSDL with six phases that help us meticulously identify and mitigate any potential cybersecurity risks: 1) our cybersecurity engineers train and test software development teams, covering security topics and best practices to ensure secure working efficiency; 2) we establish baseline security and privacy requirements for upcoming software updates or releases; 3) the R&D team continually reviews and analyses how devices should perform with upcoming software releases while searching for potential security threats; 4) we consistently perform static code analysis to maintain, review, and optimise the code within our networking devices; 5) we conduct multiple tests, including comprehensive fuzzing and penetration, to finalise the verdicts; 6) once these rigorous tests are complete, the documentation is finalised, archived, and used as a reference when the new cycle begins. - NAVIGATING TODAY: WHAT IS GNSS & GPS FLEET TRACKING?
Discover the role of GNSS & GPS in fleet tracking with Teltonika Networks, enhancing performance and location data analysis for your IoT solutions. More News 1/28/2026 Meet Altos: The Wi-Fi 7 Router Invited to Your Living Room 1/21/2026 Managed vs unmanaged switches: choose the right fit 1/20/2026 Password Security Standards – Best Practices to Protect your Devices NAVIGATING TODAY: WHAT IS GNSS & GPS FLEET TRACKING? 13 September 2023 When the topic of location or fleet tracking arises, most of us immediately associate it with GPS. This navigational system identifies and pinpoints the coordinates of an object located anywhere in the world, so you’d be correct to draw a connection between the two. However, the entirety of this location-tracking technology extends beyond the confines of GPS network and more toward GNSS. No, there are no GNSS vs. GPS battles to be had. Because in reality, GPS is one of several navigational systems grouped under the term Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). So, when figuring out the technology behind things like location or fleet tracking, we must first investigate the overarching concept: GNSS. WHAT IS GNSS & HOW DOES IT WORK? GNSS is the mother of it all. It’s a collection of many different satellites, including the GPS, Galileo, and BeiDou, that collect positioning, navigation, and timing ( PNT ) information of certain objects and transmit it to GNSS receivers. These receivers analyze collected data and generate precise location, velocity, and time information. The question arises: how do GNSS receivers process such data ? GNSS receivers collect signals from multiple satellites, with each broadcasting information about its precise position and timing. The receivers then measure the exact time it took for each signal to reach the receiver and calculate the distance between receiver and satellites. Once this information is retrieved, GNSS receivers consider things like potential atmospheric delays or clock errors. These considerations find their place within the receiver's software algorithms, which undertake intricate calculations that serve to enhance the accuracy of the position data by compensating for errors and inconsistencies. Ultimately, the GNSS receivers present this calculated and refined data through a display interface, map application, or other predetermined mediums. GPS & THE BENEFITS OF FLEET TRACKING As clarified before, GPS is among the systems encompassed within the scope of GNSS, though it has to be said that GPS is the most prevalent one out there. GPS is the U.S. satellite navigation system, which can assist in multiple scenarios requiring virtual monitoring and tracking of fleets, assets, or any mobile objects. One of the many cases where GPS shines is keeping tabs on vehicle locations. Our friends at Teltonika Telematics have showcased a number of such examples, including a large fleet security enhanced by eye beacons . Imagine this: you own a car-sharing company that lets registered users access a fleet of your cars on an as-needed basis. Since none of these cars have designated owners but are accessible through a mobile app, they become a delicious-looking treat for robbers to steal. In case that happens, GPS fleet tracking is here to save the day. As soon as the car-sharing company receives a theft alert, it can quickly start tracking the stolen vehicle’s exact location in real-time using a satellite navigation system. A fleet GPS service consistently transmits location data to the relevant servers and allows the company to keep an eye on the vehicle’s movement, even when its location is constantly changing, thus enabling effective tracking. Once a stolen vehicle from a car-sharing service is successfully tracked and recovered with the help of GPS, the data GPS collected becomes a huge helping hand that serves as evidence in legal proceedings. GNSS & GPS FLEET TRACKING VALUE IN IoT Projected to grow from $175.19 billion in 2021 to $320.73 billion in 2028 at a CAGR of 9.02% , the GNSS-empowered market continues to flourish across multiple industries, like transportation, agriculture, security, and the marine sector . It’s easy to understand why this is the case: many tasks within these industries are heavily-reliant on the precise location information that only GNSS can provide. Many Teltonika Networks devices have a GNSS feature and support GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS navigation systems. And when combined with GNSS antennas , the function works like a charm. GNSS enhances our networking devices’ suitability for solutions that demand robust network connectivity support and precise real-time tracking functionality. If you’re wondering what kind of use case scenarios would require both network connectivity and GNSS to function in simultaneous synergy – there are tons of examples to consider. TRANSPORTATION SECTOR CALLS FOR GNSS As previously illustrated through the hypothetical car-sharing example, the transportation sector can greatly benefit from GNSS. We’ve shared the Connectivity for Mobile Agricultural Machines use case involving Agrifac , a Dutch manufacturer specializing in innovative agricultural solutions. In this use case, we presented Agrifac’s self-propelled crop sprayers that required both robust network connectivity and GNSS capabilities to successfully realize their project. Another great example would be the Uninterrupted Connection to the Unwired Edge Cloud use case done with Unwired Networks , an Austrian networking solutions provider. This use case focuses on Postbus , a bus company in need of both a dependable bus tracking system and robust network connectivity, especially in rural areas. THE SMART CITY SECTOR IS CALLING TOO In collaboration with PROBOTEK , one of the IoD (Internet of Drones) innovators, we established the Connectivity for Drone Field Deployment use case. High demands of IoD have presented quite a challenge, as the entire solution had to be closely monitored to prevent possible malfunction while deployed. To achieve this, GNSS and top-tier network connectivity support were indispensable. The final use case that illustrates the perfect way of utilizing the synergy of GNSS and network connectivity is Unlocking the Automation of Center-pivot Irrigation Systems . Here we present how the GNSS feature and great connectivity support can help monitor and locate specific crop fields located in rural areas. This eliminates the need for farmers to visit each center-pivot irrigation system, saving them considerable labor costs and time. ENHANCED GNSS PRECISION WITH NTRIP Starting from version 7.03 of RutOS, six devices from Teltonika Networks (with a 7th one coming very soon!) support the NTRIP protocol. This protocol is meant to stream differential GPS or Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) data over the Internet, which significantly enhances the positional accuracy of GNSS data to within a few centimeters. The incorporation of NTRIP protocol support within Teltonika Networks devices makes them ideal for industries needing high-precision location data, such as agriculture. As agriculture rapidly advances toward automation, the location accuracy provided by NTRIP enables more precise farming techniques. This enhances both efficiency and cost-effectiveness, paving the way for more sustainable and profitable agricultural operations. Fleet tracking with the help of GNSS technology can serve as a critical element in enhancing performance and providing comprehensive location data analysis, particularly when dealing with mobile assets, objects, or vehicles. After all, having precise knowledge of the whereabouts of your solution is far better than operating in the dark and hoping for the best. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! RutOS is a unified operating system based on OpenWrt. It is factory-embedded into every Teltonika Networks device, so no installation is required from the user, and there are no additional costs. This system enables our customers to have an excellent user experience due to its’ incredibly intuitive interface. RutOS helps to significantly cut costs on engineers’ training while implementing new products. Besides, it grants flexibility when migrating between different devices and platforms. The system is open-source; therefore, every client can change and adapt RutOS to get the most out of each Teltonika Networks device. Let’s look more deeply at how our software can help you achieve your business goals as we are focusing on its’ three core qualities: reliability, security, and ease of use. RELIABILITY Connection stability and overall reliability is definitely at the top of the priority list when choosing an industrial router. Throughout the development process of RutOS, we included a variety of safeguards to ensure that the devices are accessible and functioning properly at all times while affording a possibility to manage them remotely. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the most important features, helping Teltonika Networks products stand out in the market. AUTO-REBOOT One of such properties is Auto-Reboot . Automatic reboots can be used as a routine or precautionary measure to ensure that the device will self-correct some unexpected issues, especially related to connection downtime. This feature alone can prevent major service disruptions to ensure critical business continuity and solve any reliability issues before they make an impact on your solution! Ping Reboot function periodically sends requests to a specified IP address or host and waits for a response. If no response is received, the device will attempt the same action a defined number of times at a defined frequency. If there is still no response, the device will execute a specified action, which can be pre-set according to your specific needs. For example, it could trigger the router to reconnect if internet access was lost. It is also possible to set up Periodic Reboots for specified time intervals regardless of the other circumstances. Eventually, this function can save significant time and therefore costs by making one essential step to resolve absolute most of connectivity issues, so you don’t have to. WATCHDOG While the Ping Reboot helps to solve external network problems, the Watchdog functionality monitors, whether internal systems and devices are working as they are intended to. The Watchdog inspects if the software or hardware is active in specific time intervals. Whenever the application is down, and the service does not respond, the Watchdog will reset the hardware. It is important in mission-critical applications. It also reduces human involvement in such simple tasks, like turning a device off/on. This saves time and costs, while normally, the end- users would not even spot something went wrong. SMS CONTROL RutOS also offers a set of default rules that perform certain actions when they are activated by SMS messages. The default list contains more than 20 rules which may be edited; however, a user may configure custom ones too. SMS Utilities provide great flexibility in managing a device remotely. For example, it allows rebooting a router, turning mobile data on and off, checking mobile data limit status, changing mobile data settings, upgrading firmware, and many more. New rules are continuously being added through updates, and a complete majority of RutOS functions can be easily configured via SMS. In essence, most of RutOS functions can be adjusted using SMS. While this may not be the most convenient way to do this, it can certainly help to pull through in situations where there is just no other way. AUTOMATIC SIM SWITCH The automatic SIM Switch functionality provides a possibility to configure rules for the device to switch from one SIM card to another under specific circumstances. This feature is irreplaceable in a variety of industrial, energy, or IoT solutions, where losing connection is beyond possibility. Dual SIM functionality with an auto switch option provides reliability and prevents downtime. For example, a user may use the services of two different operators, and whenever the primary connection is lost or the signal strength becomes weaker than desired, the router will switch to the secondary SIM card. It might as well be extremely useful in transport applications when the vehicles are traveling across different countries. Having set up automated switch rules for two SIM cards helps to save on high roaming charges. This functionality can also be set up to balance out data plans. The router will detect the data limit and switch to secondary SIM whenever that limit is reached. There are so many scenarios where the automatic SIM switch can be useful and essentially save the continuity of a solution without any human involvement. FAILOVER Similarly to automatic SIM switch, the failover functionality provides connection continuity, just on a different level. The failover allows backing up the primary WAN connection in case it goes down. The user may set up priorities for each interface to be used whenever a higher option in the list loses connection or becomes insufficient. For example, when the primary wired connectivity is lost, the router could choose from up to three more back up options in Teltonika Networks routers: SIM 1, SIM2, and Wi-Fi depending on the model. ATMs are a good example where having a single connectivity option is out of the question due to the risks of downtime. Nowadays, the complete majority of ATMs across the globe are using industrial cellular routers to ensure connection continuity between ATMs and central systems of the bank, and leveraging multiple connectivity sources at the same time, including wired and cellular. TIME SYNCHRONIZATION Teltonika Networks routers use Network Time Protocol (NTP) for clock synchronization between computer systems over packet-switched, variable-latency data networks. A user may either select the time zone of the device, choose mobile operator synchronization for routers using a SIM card, or enable GPS synchronization for carrying out this task. Synchronization via the GPS module does not require having an internet connection. However, this type of synching functions only in our devices with GNSS functionality. In RutOS, the users are provided with four default time servers, but custom ones can be added too, as per the clients’ needs. Our products may act as both: NTP Client and NTP Server, meaning that they are also capable of providing clock synchronization to the other devices in the network. This is essential in the industrial sector when sensors and data readings must be accurately time-stamped and analyzed. MOBILE BANDLOCKS LTE Band locking , available in RutOS, solves a problem in areas that are close to the borders of foreign countries. As the cellular provider signals overlap, your router might be periodically switching between different operators, which affects the stability of your connection. The band that is chosen automatically might not be the one that will offer the fastest or the most stable connection available. Locking your device to a specific LTE band can have a significant effect on your Internet connection speed, reliability, and cost. EVENT REPORTING Event Reporting allows configuring rules and get informed via SMS or email when certain events occur on a device. These events can be almost anything – configuration changes, reboots, new connections, various status updates, and more. A single SMS reporting a changed status of mobile connection or digital input can save the solution operators from significant losses or downtime, especially in mission-critical situations. Imagine, you are responsible for the network availability of dozens of Industrial plants and over the weekend you get a notification that in one of them, the router is not able to reconnect to a controller and the plant cannot continue operations. Early notification can save the whole operation and make the diagnostics of an issue much easier and time-efficient. Here we reviewed only the main of the features, ensuring the reliability of Teltonika Networks products while using RutOS. Our focus is to prevent problems before they happen, or at least afford a possibility for a swift reaction, whenever the prevention is not possible. In the next section, we would like to familiarize you with a none-the-less important aspect of our software - security. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends!
