RutOS JUST GOT BETTER!

Although the summer is here, there was not much time to slow down for us yet. Our teams were picking up the pace while working on completing another major update of RutOS. Besides fixing the bugs and improving the previous functionalities, we have also added some completely new features. Today we invite you to have a look at the most important highlights of RutOS v.R_00.07.00, which is applicable to RUT9***, RUTX**, RUT3** and TRB** series products. As usual, our focus remains around security, performance, flexibility, and reliability.

RutOS JUST GOT BETTER!

DNP3 Support

We are constantly adding new protocols to RutOS to support as many systems as possible. Now we are adding DNP3 to the list, where we already have some other widely used industrial protocols, such as Modbus or SNMP. Initially developed for the electric utility industry, this communication protocol has easily found its' way into more application scenarios. This protocol is commonly found in water and sewage, oil and gas, transportation, and other environments commonly using SCADA systems. With this newest addition to the list of supported protocols, our routers will be able to communicate with computers, RTUs (Remote Terminal Units), non-RTU devices, and Master Stations running on DNP3.

User Interface

Nobody likes slow software. That is why we made the RutOS faster. And by faster we mean A LOT faster, like ten times! But not just that - we have also changed the whole user interface. Although it may look similar at a first glance as we kept the design familiar to the users, the system itself has been redesigned from its' core using the new technology Vue.js - bringing more flexibility, security, and overall dynamic to the Web UI. One of the main changes is felt in the creation and editing of the configurations, which now are done on modal pages - much faster and way more conveniently! Below we prepared a short video to compare the previous performance of RutOS with what we got now.

Security

Teltonika Networks RutOS is a highly customized OpenWRT-based software. OpenWRT is a widely used and trusted platform because of many reasons, like high-security standards, superb performance and stability metrics, and continuous community support. This time we have updated the RutOS to the latest 19.07.7 OpenWRT base, which means all the previous bugs are no longer there and the performance is better than ever before. Besides, all supported targets have been brought to Linux Kernel version 4.14.221, Firewall updated to Release 3 and numerous CVE vulnerabilities have been fixed too.

Loads of new features for RUT9** series devices*

This update is particularly significant to the RUT9** series products because it will level up a lot of their functionalities and upgrade the UI into what we see in the RUTX** devices. This update will bring a lot of new features previously requested by our clients and this is the most important part for us - taking into account our partners' needs. Let's go through a few of these highlights in more detail.

Secure Boot. With the newest firmware update comes the Secure Boot functionality to the RUT9** series devices. However, it will not become immediately available to all the RUT9** routers, but it is possible to request it by contacting your sales manager. Secure boot on RUT9 devices requires specialized hardware. A secure boot system adds cryptographic checks to each stage of the system boot process. Cryptographic processing verifies the authenticity of all of the protected software images that are executed by the device. This additional check prevents unauthorized images from running on the router. This way, it secures the router from any unwanted “guests” loading malicious software versions.

Multiuser. With the latest update, the RUT9** products received a multiuser mode. It means that now it is possible to add new user accounts with different access rights by assigning them to specific groups and limit their WebUI read or write access rights. This is a quick and efficient way to assign employees only the rights they are required for completing their direct duties and easily make changes along the way, especially in larger companies.

RutOS JUST GOT BETTER!

Multi-WAN. Multi-WAN functionality allows connecting various internet ISPs using multiple WAN ports (as many ISPs as there are ports on a router). It can be beneficial as failover and backup in cases where any internet downtime is not acceptable and the internet connection is unreliable. Having internet from two or more ISPs enhances the experience as whenever one of them fails, there is still another option to switch to. Check out a tutorial on how to set up a LAN port as a WAN on our Wiki page.

Load balancing. Multi-WAN also increases the load balancing possibilities, enabling to always have a high-speed reliable internet connection by dividing internet traffic between interfaces. This comes in handy when multiple applications are in use and hence, they use a high amount of bandwidth. Unless a router is set up differently, usually the entire load would land on a single ISP and reduce the connection speed. Multi-WAN setup and load balancing help to avoid this issue. Check out how to set up load balancing on our Wiki.

WireGuard. The newest version of WireGuard is now available on RUT9*** routers as requested by many of our clients. WireGuard is a simple, fast, lean, and modern VPN that utilizes secure and trusted cryptography. It is a great option for someone looking for a less power-consuming protocol that also offers high speed and is easy to use. Please note that WireGuard is additional software that can be installed from the Package Manager of a corresponding product in our Wiki.

These are the brightest latest highlights of RutOS. As usual, we made a full changelog available on our Wiki page. You may access it by clicking on a respective product model name and selecting “Firmware downloads” for v.R_00.07.00. We hope you are excited about these improvements as much as we are!
