Networking devices aren’t the only products our R&D team cooks in their IoT oven.

In parallel, we constantly update RutOS, the operating system running on the vast majority of Teltonika’s networking devices and is meant to expand the horizons of their ease of use and capabilities. Its newest version, 7.08, has now blossomed, so let’s sit back, relax, and see what it offers for your networking solutions.

RING, RING TO MOBILE NETWORKS

Did someone call for a more intuitive design? We sure did.

The newest RutOS update introduces a reorganised mobile configuration layout. The original General page is now split into three pages: General, Connection, and Utilities, each with easy and super convenient access to mobile interface configuration. However, our R&D team wouldn’t be ours if that were all there was to say about convenience.

Take the Connection page, for example. Here, you can set your 5G devices to operate in different modes: auto, SA only, or NSA only; streamlining the process and enhancing user control.

We also added an entirely new page, titled Limits, found in the Mobile section. This page is dedicated to setting up data and SMS limits to ensure you won’t face any unexpected hefty bills from your operators. The Limits page is separated from other pages to help avoid clutter and your potential to be overwhelmed when managing your networking solutions. Neat!

PIN codes

Besides these layout improvements, we’ve added the option to change your SIM card PIN codes through the Utilities page, which is a very neat feature, to say the least. Regular updates to your PIN codes can significantly enhance your networking solutions’ security against unauthorised access, as frequent changes make the PIN codes more difficult to guess.

New DNS over HTTPS proxy package

However, when speaking of security, the cherry on top of mobile networks in RutOS 7.08 is undoubtedly the HTTPS proxy package, available in the Package Manager section. This package allows your networking devices to handle encrypted web traffic more securely, which is particularly crucial for security enthusiasts and networking solutions that must comply with public tender requirements.

And if packages available on RutOS are something of your interest, look out for an article that’s entirely dedicated to exploring this section!

ALL HAIL DATA

Data is the backbone of networking solutions – no bones about it! So, to ensure your data receives the best processing possible, we’ve developed new ways for you to obtain high-quality data without breaking a sweat.

Lua Script

For IoT engineers of networking solutions focusing on data-to-server configurations, we’ve added Lua Script support to enhance the RutOS Data to Server feature! This compact programming language empowers advanced engineers to independently program data-to-server functions, offering enhanced flexibility in configuration and simplified data implementation within server configurations.

TRB143 M-Bus upgrades

The Teltonika’s TRB143 IoT gateway, your go-to for M-bus telemetry data needs, just got some great upgrades with RutOS 7.08, including a smoother user experience and new features!

RutOS 7.08 enhances the TRB143 IoT gateway’s ability to scan connected end devices, making it quick and easy to identify specific networking devices within the network infrastructure. This new version also allows for configuration adjustments directly on the meter, allowing for modifications to its primary and secondary addresses, as well as baud rate. The latter governs data transmission and reading speeds, which is crucial for networking solutions’ operational efficiency.

Usually, the M-Bus protocol relays all received data directly to the server. However, this firmware update equips the TRB143 with a data filtering function that enables users to select specific data for server transmission. This feature can significantly reduce network congestion, lower costs associated with data storage and management, and enhance security by omitting sensitive information from network transmission.

Last but certainly not least, RutOS 7.08 adds new statuses to aid in diagnostics and troubleshooting, further enhancing the TRB143 IoT gateway’s user experience and capabilities.

Control over Azure IoT Hub

We’ve made a pretty major update regarding Azure IoT Hub, focusing on how you can remotely monitor and control your networking solutions. Users can now connect to their Azure account and establish centralised control over Teltonika networking devices using API. What’s great about this is that most device features available via the RutOS WebUI are also available using API.

SAFE & SOUND

Continuing to improve user experience and your network’s safety, we’ve established a few more functionalities that we’re sure will be much appreciated.

Let’s Encrypt certificate generation

The errors of unsecured connection – be gone!

We’ve integrated the Let’s Encrypt certificate application into RutOS. This is a free-of-charge and easy-to-use tool that facilitates the generation of HTTPS certificates. With these certificates, you can say goodbye to the secure connection error windows that pop up on browsers when accessing your networking device’s WebUI via HTTPS.

802.1X client protocol support

For those seeking enhanced network access control and security, we have exciting news: RutOS 7.08 now enables Teltonika’s networking devices to act as 802.1X clients!

Commonly referred to as dot1x, the 802.1X protocol is meant to enforce network security through port-based authentication. With version 7.08, Teltonika devices like wireless access points and RUTM, RUTX, and RUTC-series routers, can serve as clients that provide the necessary credentials to authenticate themselves and access your network without trouble.

DATA ANALYTICS, COMING RIGHT UP!

A key addition to RutOS 7.08 is the Data Analytics feature. Active only after opting-in, this new tool will log data concerning errors on RutOS pages and promptly alert our R&D team about which pages or functions require check-ups or fixing.

This function will not collect any personal information of users and their networking solutions; its sole purpose is to identify and report issues related specifically to RutOS’s functionality. By having this data, rather than relying exclusively on user reports from community support platforms, we can directly detect issues and respond to them quickly and more effectively.

RAPID FIRE UPDATES ROUND!

Your networking solutions deserve the best of the best, so here are even more things for you to check out in RutOS version 7.08:

  • we’ve updated the Package Manager layout. With new visualisation and filtering options, it becomes much more intuitive and easier to use;
  • we’ve revamped the radio page layout and made 5 GHz Wi-Fi automatically select channel, moving away from channel 36 being the default;
  • the OPC UA protocol now has a security mode, available to both client and server;
  • TLS SSL support for SNMP has been added, which is exciting for all security enthusiasts, as SNMP traffic can now be encrypted;
  • we’ve added brute force protection for SMS and SNMP functions. Now, after a specified number of unsuccessful login attempts, access will be blocked. The threshold of login attempts can be customised to meet your specific requirements;
  • the debouncing technique is now implemented, by default, to your I/Os connections with a minimum interval of 10ms. This technique stabilises electrical fluctuations from actions like pressing a button, registering them as a single event instead of multiple instances;
  • single sign-on (SSO) can now be established via hotspot;
  • in the Access Control page found in the Administration section, you can now log into a device’s WebUI using accounts created on an external RADIUS server. Previously, users were required to register on both RutOS and RADIUS to enable this functionality;
  • IPsec now supports XFRM, which enables virtual interfaces in IPsec to have more routing options;
  • Teltonika’s wireless access points, the TAP100 and TAP200, now have hotspot and Wi-Fi scanner functions.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

The list of new functions, additions, and improvements of RutOS is never-ending. The majority of these additions are driven by your needs and requests, allowing us to tailor RutOS to meet your networking solutions’ specific requirements.

Our goal is to simplify and streamline your experience. So, if you have any specific requests or suggestions for the upcoming RutOS version 7.09, feel free to contact us and share your ideas with us!
